Volunteering With Us

We welcome all to volunteer in as small or large a capacity as you’d like: we’d love to have you join us! You don’t have to be a member to help us serve. If you are interested in volunteering, contact us below.

Volunteer as an individual Server

Whether you can help once or become a regular, your time makes a real difference.  You can volunteer by providing a salad, side or dessert for 25-50 people.  The need is great, with some Sundays over 150 people being served, so every little bit helps.  You can also come and help serve the Sunday Supper: the commitment is about 2 hours on Sunday, and the tasks are simple but essential—serving food and and tidying up afterward. No experience needed !

Volunteer or Sponsor a Meal as an Organization

Are you connected with an organization that would like to sponsor a meal or organize a group to volunteer together? Sunday supper is truly a community-wide effort, and your organization can make a huge impact while also strengthening your team and having fun.

3 ladies working with plants

Do you like to be outside in the spring? Enjoy plants and flowers?  No green thumb needed to help with the plant sale. Community members and church members come together to donate, dig up, pot, price, transplant, set up,  or take down the plant sale. This popular springtime event can always use helpers!

group of people assembling health kits

Each year members and non members alike work to assemble kits to help support relief and  recovery  in disaster zones with hygiene kits and school bags.  We hold fun work days to cut fabric and sew school bags, assemble materials and fill them as well as assemble and fill hygiene kits for victims of disasters.  Second Congregational Church serves as a drop off/pick up center for other churches doing the same.

Two smiling women in holiday outfits

It takes a village (or a town!) to pull this off.  Always the first weekend in December. the Second Congregational Church’s Snowball Bazaar has been held yearly for the past 77 years!   It serves as a resource for the community to shop on a budget, recycle and reuse of items, and generates funds for the church’s missions. There are so many ways to volunteer:  baking, helping in the kitchen, serving food, helping organize the tag sale, donating items to the tag sale and bake sale, setting up, breaking down,  advertising, craft days, and so much more.  We have volunteers of all walks of life and ability helping, non church members included.

A bookshelf with non perishable food items

Outside the Clayton Room in the lobby is a small bookshelf with some non perishable staples on it. We call it the give & take shelf: often folks just need some food to tide them over until they can get to the food pantry.  If you have extra food at home you can donate, it is welcome.  Items such as peanut butter, and canned meats that are of high nutritional value are especially welcome.

We also provide soaps, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products in the bathrooms in church for those in need. If you can help provide these items for those in need, it can make a big difference.

Many sized and color coffee mugs

It’s not so bad: we have an industrial dishwasher! We always can use help with the dishes after fellowship on Sunday mornings and in the evening after Sunday Supper. No experience needed, and it is easy to do.

Mug of coffee and some cookies

Each Sunday after services we enjoy coffee, tea, and a light snack.  If you are able to bring a plate of cookies or a light snack to share or can help make coffee, it makes a big difference.

smiling woman at desk

Church members can help  by volunteering to fill in for the office administrator from time to time when she has to be away or on vacation.  Never more than a few hours, it involves answering the phone and  greeting visitors.

Can you help with some office tasks?  Our office administrator can always use help with things like  printing bulletins or making name tags for new visitors and members. No skill required!

bouquet of beautiful multi colored flowers

Everyone loves the beautiful flowers on the chancel table.  You can help out by signing up to provide flowers one week.  They don’t have to be an extravagant bouquet, some folks bring in a beautiful flowering house plant.   During Lent, we use non flowering house plants.   There is a sign up sheet in Webster Hall, where you can choose a week that works the best for you.

You don’t have to commit to every single Sunday. Many folks – members and non members alike – will join us when they can. Rehearsals are held in the sanctuary of SCC on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:30 am.  Under the direction of local educator and musician Matt Edwards, we have a great time singing!

sewing machine foot with hands of person advancing fabric

Volunteers are always needed to help cut fabric and assemble bags for the Church World Service Kids Kits (formerly known as School Kits). Several fun work days are held each year where volunteers cut and assemble the fabric bags.  You don’t need to know how to sew to help! Cutting the fabric patterns and handles can be done with no previous experience.  We’ll show you how.

A holy bible open to Psalms

You can sign up to serve as a volunteer liturgist for an upcoming Sunday worship service.  This involves reading a few sentences or a short paragraph in addition to Scripture provided by Rev. Mark at set times during the service.  New liturgists are always welcome.  If you have questions, contact Rev. Mark at [email protected].
